Some information on Aldershot:  Aldershot is mostly known for it's connection to the British Army, with the Aldershot Miltary Town area being the 'Home of the British Army'.  The town's Miltary connection spans back to 1854, at the time of the Crimean War, when the surrounding heathland being established as a Miltary base.  It was Aldershot's establishment as a Miltary base that led to it's rapid expansion of population, which continued to grow and peak in the 1950s. 

Prior to the Crimean War, Aldershot was little known. It was indeed a vast stretch of common land, andit's sparsh population meant that it was unsuitable for most types of farming and agriculture.  In the 1720s and 30s, the London to Winchester turnpike that passed between Bagshot and Farnham was a dangerous area and the place inwhich many highway robberies took place.  Dick Turpin and Springheeled Jack were said to operate in the area.

Aldreshot is today divided into the Political Wards of Rowhill, Wellington, Manor Park, Heron Wood and North Town.  Famous residents, past and present, include Martin Freeman, Ian McEwan and Heather Mills.
