About Newington: Newington is an area within the London Borough of Southwark.  The name 'Newington' means 'new farmstead' or the newer part of the manor of
Walworth.  It is thought that the church described in Domesday Book in the entry for Walworth was
most probably that which was located here, so that when local administration by the
Vestry Boards within the metropolitan area was created, it assigned what is usually known as 'Walworth' as the vestry of 'St Mary, Newington'.  The name has now largely gone out of use and so the area is known to its residents as 'Walworth' or 'Elephant and Castle'.
